Since the beginning our work has been entwined with projects born on the borders between theatre and social, balancing on the thread that runs from theatre to contemporary society.
We have vast experience in the sociocultural field and we are available to devise and realise specific projects with Italians and international partners.
Theatre Prison, in treatment centres for drug addicts, with people affected by mental health, within projects of international co-operation.
The line between normality and deviance is perhaps the core of theatre. It represents the alternative place, the place“other”, in which inside and out, normality and deviance are often suspended and reconstructed.
The idea that moves our work is to bring the Theatre outside of theatres and inside society, not exclusively with streets shows, giving back to the audience this “submersed theatre”.
Since 2006 owe organise a workshop in the Prison of Castelfranco Emilia. A creative factory where inmates have the opportunity to experiment, guided by professional operators, with different artistic skills and languages (music, stage craft and dance), the union of which defines our way of making theatre. The first participants of the workshops has had the opportunity to take part in the 2007 final of the Ustica National Prize for Theatre with the show Fragment. Since then, Teatro dei Venti concentrated on offering complete formative courses which would help inmates discover a new way to express their own emotions and channel their own energies into respect for others.
Since 2009 we are one of the founding partners for the Coordination theatre prison in Emilia Romagna, a project developed to set up a network between the existing experiences of theatre in prison within the region. Between 2009 and 2010 we held a workshop inside the Prison Accommodation for Minors of Nisida in Napoli,, with the realisation of a final show in March 2010. Since 2014 we activated two theatre workshops in the Modena Prisons, in both the female and the Sex Offenders sections.
The objective of the workshops is the realisation of shows and stage studies which could, when possible, bring the inmates outside jail, to meet the public. In various occasions we brought the public inside the prisons, just like during the Trasparenze Festival 2015 when we organised two shows inside Modena Prisons.
Since 2009we created a theatre workshop “The Albatross flight”, aimed at people affected by mental health disorders, in collaboration with the service Sportello Social Point of Modena and the Department for Mental Health of the local health service.
During the years the workshops led to the construction of an actual theatre company composed of users and non-users of the service Sportello Social Point, to search for a dialogue between normality and diversity.
We tried to create, through theatre, new ways of communication between those considered normal and those who in life, had direct experience of mental disorder. Creating a “pool of experimentation”, of ways to relate and communicate, learning new possibilities of action within the social context and through that, being able to actively participate in the activities of the community of which the participants of the workshops are part. Since 2013 the workshop has been funded by the regional project “Theatre and Mental Health”.
Our work within the field of International Co-operation consists of the realisation of theatre workshops for adults, teenagers and children, artistic exchange with professional companies, and further training for professionals and staging of our shows.
We are convinced that the universal language of theatre, beyond the simple staging of the texts, through research and the study of communal archetypes of different cultures and of the pre-expressive language, is an extraordinary mean of communication and relationship.
PAST PROJECTS
Serbia
2006: Realisation of the shows Malaparata and Sleeping Beauty for the communities of various cities and villages of the Vojivodina province.
2011/2012: Artistic exchange and professional training for field specialists, part of the project was realised in Novisad and part in Modena.
2015: Theatre workshop during the artistic exchange experience and professional training with the group Otvorenti kruk. The project “Policies for minors in Serbia” was supported by Regione Emilia Romagna and promoted by Comune di Modena. Part of the project has been realised in Novi Sad at the SOS Village of the Infant and part in Modena, with the artistic residence of the Serbian group within the Trasparenze Festival.
Mozambique
2009 and 2010: artistic exchange with the Grupo Machaka, cultural association and dance theatre of Maputo. Both times part of the project took place in Mozambique and part in Italy, culminating in 2010 with the debut of the show “Sciarramu” at the Teatro delle Passioni.
